Scent Ballad - No.03: The Journey of Time (Bus Shelters) (2012)

As we walk, our senses constantly probe the world, focusing the material world through the lens of our perception and experiences. While you read this sentence, the second hand creeps clockwise a little bit further. When did you begin to count Time? The fragrance of springtime blossom, the crunch of snow. These beautiful details are ignored when you check the time strapped to your wrist. Nature is obsolete. Day by day, year by year, the past repeats itself. You fail to realise the time speeding by until you look in the mirror, count the wrinkles on your face. Nothing can halt the march of Time.

As we wait for the bus, you look around. A child is tugging at his mother’s skirts. “I’m hungry”, he says. “I want to go home”. Someone in a suit is busy on the phone, their mind never in the present moment. Day by day, year by year. In Life, the view through the window constantly changes. Every person, with their own window, sees the world through slightly different eyes. Memories and dreams may transcend time and space, but back in reality the second hand creeps onward.

This project is a conceptual installation at several bus shelters, exploring the human spirit through the media of graphic design, colour, aromatherapy and experimentation with Time. These aim to uncover long-lost memories from the subconscious of the audience, giving the audience a feeling of connection, of spirituality. The buses don’t only symbolise Life, but also a continuous cycle of time and nature. Life is a cycle during which Change is the only constant. Throughout we are plagued by our dreams and memories, our only escape from the daily grind.

The river flows to the sea, day by day, year by year. While waiting for the bus to arrive, sit down, have a break, and enjoy.
