Scent Ballad - No.03: The Journey of Time (Display) (2012)

Breathe. Can you smell that bittersweet fragrance? Time passes with the passing of the scent. The moment eludes us; we humans can only sense the movement of time. We can never truly stand still, but only watch as the river flows smoothly past our feet. However, we can draw patterns. Cycles and repetitions are an integral part of Nature. The tides, the seasons. Our lives, full of their own little rhythms and commonalities.

Breath deep. There it is again, that scent. It triggers memories; existing in the conscious, unconfined by time and space. Transcendent fragments which compose our lives. Set forth on your journey along the river and be sure to catch the most colourful, the most beautiful experiences for yourself. Capture them within a touch, a taste, a sight, a sound.

A scent.

Material: Printed Acetate, Felt, Essential Oils

The best way to display this project would be to hang it from the ceiling in a circle, to represent the circle of time. However, the previous space was not large enough to accommodate this, so I compromised and hung it along the wall (as seen in the photo).

Scent Ballad - No.01: Harmony - Geranium + Frankincense (2012)

Fragrance: Geranium + Frankincense
Element: Water
Material: Felt, Mountboard, Printed Acetate, Essential Oil

Harmony attempts to capture the sense of smell as a series of visualisations. The core concepts of these pieces are a combination of the Chinese Five Elements and Gabriel Mojay’s ideas on aromatherapy and psychology. Essential oils were the foundation of these pieces, upon which a framework was constructed of signs, symbolism and colour psychology to explore images of harmony within Eastern traditions. Stained glass has also influenced the project, especially the way in which Church windows fill the space with their symbols and a range of colours.
